Our Top 10 Summer Road Safety Tips
- Be patient and drive within the speed limit; Allow plenty of time so you don't need to rush.
- Keep a safe following distance from vehicles in front so you can stop safely.
- Drive to the conditions - including the weather, the road, the time of day or traffic volume.
- Stay hydrated and drive well rested. Take regular breaks to stay alert or share the driving.
- Do not drive after consuming alcohol or drugs.
- Avoid distractions - put your phone on silent or keep it out of reach.
- Check your vehicle before your trip:
-Make sure your Warrant of Fitness is up to date and check that your lights, indicators and wipers all work. - Make sure your tyres have at least 1.5mm of tread and make sure your windscreen is clean, with no cracks.
- Plan your route in advance and find out about any road closures of incidents using NZTA's State Highway journey planner.
- If you are towing a trailer or a caravan, make sure you do not exceed the speed limit of 90km/hr, and check that your load is secure.
