Our Top 10 Summer Road Safety Tips

  1. Be patient and drive within the speed limit;  Allow plenty of time so you don't need to rush.
  2. Keep a safe following distance from vehicles in front so you can stop safely.
  3. Drive to the conditions - including the weather, the road, the time of day or traffic volume.
  4. Stay hydrated and drive well rested. Take regular breaks to stay alert or share the driving.
  5. Do not drive after consuming alcohol or drugs.
  6. Avoid distractions - put your phone on silent or keep it out of reach.
  7. Check your vehicle before your trip:
    -Make sure your Warrant of Fitness is up to date and check that your lights, indicators and wipers all work.
  8. Make sure your tyres have at least 1.5mm of tread and make sure your windscreen is clean, with no cracks.
  9. Plan your route in advance and find out about any  road closures of incidents using NZTA's State Highway journey planner.
  10. If you are towing a trailer or a caravan, make sure you do not exceed the speed limit of 90km/hr, and check that your load is secure.
